Currently Reading February 21, 2018

I am kind of in a pattern of reading a middle grade or young adult book, an adult book and a Harry Potter (I am re-reading them this year). It's working for me so I am keeping at it. One of these is always on my Nook so I can read when I wake up at night without waking up my husband.

I started The Hazel Wood today at school (I am thinking it's a little mature for my middle school library, but perfect for high school), I am really liking it so far, but I am worried about what direction it might go.

After seeing The Last Mrs. Parrish by Liv Constantine on many blogs and bookstagrams (I just don't love that word) I felt I needed to give it a try. It has sucked me right in; I think I am really going to enjoy it.

I am very happy I am re-reading the Harry Potter's, I have been meaning to for a few years. There are a lot of little details I have forgotten about that I love discovering again.

Recently I was sent three lovely middle grade books, two from Random House and one from Penguin (thank you so much!). Each one of their descriptions made me tear up a little bit. I haven't read any of them, but will be doing so soon! I'll also be ordering a couple of copies of each for my library because all of these books deal with different issues, and middle graders love to read issue books!

The Science of Breakable Things by Tae Keller

How do you grow a miracle?
For the record, this is not the question Mr. Neely is looking for when he says everyone in class must answer an important question using the scientific method. But Natalie's botanist mother is suffering from depression, so this is The Question that's important to Natalie. When Mr. Neely suggests that she enter an egg drop competition, Natalie has hope.

The Ostrich and Other Lost Things by Beth Hautala

Eleven-year-old Olivia Grant has a knack for finding lost things. She can find lost rings, pets, and even her elderly neighbor's misplaced glasses. There's only one thing Olivia has never been able to find--her brother Jacob's toy ostrich. It wasn't until the day Jacob lost his ostrich that Olivia noticed how different he was: Jacob is autistic, and though she's his little sister, Olivia often feels like the older of the pair, his caretaker. And with her parents so heavily focused on maintaining status quo for Jacob, it's Olivia who has stagnated in his shadow--unable to explore new opportunities, or to be her own person. In fact, apart from being Jacob's sister, Olivia's not really sure who she is.

So when summer break begins, and the local community theater announces auditions for an all children's production of her favorite show, Peter Pan, Olivia jumps at the chance to claim something for herself. But what begins as a promising opportunity and a wonderful escape quickly becomes pure chaos. The visiting zoo with an odd assortment of animals--including an ostrich that causes even more trouble than Jacob's missing toy--only make matters worse, as Olivia's summer is shaping up to be just as consumed by Jacob's needs as the rest of her life has been.

In time, and with the help of some unlikely alliances, Olivia must learn what it means to be separate from her brother and still love him, how to love herself in spite of her own flaws, and that not all lost things are meant to be found.

Sticky Notes by Dianne Touchell

Fall publishing season is gearing up and I have been getting some great middle grade reads in the mail.  One of my favorite things about getting books from publishers is that I get to see some books showcased that I hadn't heard of yet.  I have added all of these to my fall order for my library!

This past week I got:

The Littlest Bigfoot by Jennifer Weiner.  As you recall I have been Obsessing Over this book and was SO excited when it came in the mail.  It also came with a darling stuff bigfoot.  As soon as I finish the two books I am currently reading I will be starting this one.  Can't wait!!

The Girl Who Rode the Wind by Stacy Gregg was one that I had put on my library order for the fall.  Nine years into being a librarian and I am still amazed at how many girls love horse books.  I am going to pass this along to one of my 8th grade girls and have her read it.  She was just complaining about not having anything good to read!

Duels & Deception by Cindy Antesy looks like an awesome period read.  I think I will save this one for this winter!

The Inquisitor's Tale by Adam Gidwitz looks DARLING!  This one is going to be a fun read and I bet I will have a few readers at my school who will really enjoy it.

Jubilee by Patricia Reilly Giff was one that was not on my radar.  Not sure how I missed it, but am really glad it came in the mail.   It sounds so sweet and heartbreaking.  It looks like it will be a quick, but emotional read.  

Moo by Sharon Creech is going to be another popular one in my library.  She is such a strong writer and I have so many kids that read her whole collection here.  She's always popular! 

I also got an amazing pack of YA books from Simon & Schuster that I will highlight later in the week.  What have you added to your TBR lately?

Earlier this spring I received a wonderful box of books from Simon & Schuster.  This was an amazing box with the majority of the books already on my radar!

I squealed when I opened this one, especially when I saw The Unexpected Everything.  I love Morgan Matson!

The Geek's Guide to Unrequited Love is another one I am super excited about.  Teen contemporary romances are my favorites!  Some hot weekend soon I am going to spend time by the lake reading these two.

Three Truths and a Lie sounds like such a tense thriller.  Another great summer read!

This is Not a Werewolf Story was already on my order for the fall.  I think it looks adorable and perfect for a middle school library.

Savage sounds so different than anything out there.  I am going to order this one this fall as well!

Girl About Town is probably the one I was most excited about. I LOVE old time stuff, old time radio, old movies, all of it.  This book looks awesome and it takes place during the start of the golden age of movies!

Last week I was so excited to get this pack of Lisa Graff books in the mail.  She is a staple here in my library, perfect for middle school readers.  I read Umbrella Summer years ago and enjoyed it greatly.  I haven't read any of hers so this weekend, while I am at my sons' soccer tournament (a three hour drive away).  So I am taking A Tangle of Knots and A Clatter of Jars with me on the trip.  And, I already had Lost in the Sun checked out from my library to read over the summer, so I was very excited to get my own copy.  I will be reading that this summer as well!

The other day I was lucky enough to get a finished copy of Wishing Day by Lauren Myracle in the mail.  This is a book that was high on my TBR list for this spring so I squealed a bit when I opened my package.  Thanks so much Katherine Tegen Books and Harper Collins.  Here is the synopsis:

On the third night of the third month after a girl’s thirteenth birthday, every girl in the town of Willow Hill makes three wishes.

Last week I got a fun pack of middle grade books from HarperCollins.  There were a few in here that had escaped my attention so it was nice to see them in person!

Somebody Stop Ivy Pocket by Caleb Krisp:

I have but haven't read the first Ivy Pocket.  The covers are amazing, a little bit of goth and whimsy mixed.  And they look like such fun reads.  I need to read the first one soon!  I put them both on my last book order of the year.

Backyard Witch: Jess's Story by Christine Hepperman:

This one also is the second book in a series.  The Backyard Witch is such a fun character, can't wait to see what is happening with her in this story!

Eleven and Holding by Mary Penney:
 This is a middle grade book that had escaped my attention before I got it in the mail.  It looks so good and like it would be such a good addition to any library.  I might not be able to read this one yet because of emotions, but I will hopefully sometime this summer.  Ordered it for the fall for my library.


5 Times Revenge by Lindsay Eland
Another one that had escaped my attention until now!  Looks like such a fun middle school romp, can't wait to give it a try!

Yesterday I got such a nice surprise in the mail!  WOLF HOLLOW by Lauren Wolk is a book I have had my eye on for sometime.  It's got a gorgeous cover and the synopsis wounds wonderful.  I will be reading this one soon for sure!  

Growing up in the shadows cast by two world wars, Annabelle has lived a mostly quiet, steady life in her small Pennsylvania town. Until the day new student Betty Glengarry walks into her class. Betty quickly reveals herself to be cruel and manipulative, and while her bullying seems isolated at first, things quickly escalate, and reclusive World War I veteran Toby becomes a target of her attacks. While others have always seen Toby’s strangeness, Annabelle knows only kindness. She will soon need to find the courage to stand as a lone voice of justice as tensions mount.

Over the past week I have picked up and been sent a lot of new books, it's been exciting.  Here are my first impressions of the ones I was sent and the reasons I checked out the ones I did.

Jacob Have I Loved:  I am working on filling some gaps in my reading of YA/MG "classics."  This one has been on my list for a long time so I grabbed it off my library shelves and am going to read it next month.

Henry Cicada's Extraordinary Elktonium Escapade:  This one was a surprise mailing from HarperCollins (thanks!)  Haven't heard much about it but the cover is darling and it looks like it would be a fun read.  If I don't get around to reading it, I will put it in my collection and have a few of my middle schoolers read it.

Finnikin of the Rock:  I told my partner librarian to read this over the summer because I had always heard good things about it and she loved it.  We have since bought the whole trilogy and several other teachers have read them as well.  I don't want to be left behind so I pulled this one off to read this winter.

Sweet Home Alaska:  I am reading this one for a blog tour.  I was so excited to be asked to be a part of this because this book was one I was really looking forward to reading!

The Treasure of Maria Mamoun:  This looks like such a fun adventure/mystery for middle schoolers.

The Secret Sea:  I really enjoyed Barry Lyga's Jasper Dent series so I was excited to get this one.  Looks like a suspenseful and intriguing read.

All the Feels:  Love those teen contemporary romance type books.  This looks like it will be a fun read about a girl who is a fangirl whose favorite character in a movie series dies.

A Week of Mondays:  This one caught my eye when it was described as a Groundhog Day for teenagers.

Dr. Critchlore's School for Minions Book Two: Gorilla Tactics:  I am not sure why the first book in this series was never on my radar, but these look so cute!  I put them both on the most recent order for my library!

Welcome to Night Vale:  This is one of my favorite podcasts! So excited for this book to enrich the story of Night Vale. Checked it out from my public library.


What have you gotten recently?

I got some great looking books from the Simon & Schuster Education and Library Marketing Department.  So exciting to open this box and see all the amazing books they sent me.  Here are my first reactions:

1.  Valkyrie by Kate O'Hearn:  I am going to give this to one of my students to try because she loves Kate O'Hearn's Pegasus series.  I will be ordering this for my library for sure!

2.  Shades of Darkness by A.R. Kahler:  I always love a book that takes place at boarding school!!  This one has a murder and some mystery and maybe supernatural elements.

3.  Other Broken Things by Christa Desir:  I think this one is at the top my list.  It just seems so interesting and real and a little disturbing.  I also think this is an issue a lot of teens grapple with, not only admitting they have a problem and getting help, but being dumped by friends who only want the "party girl."

4.  Bounders by Monica Tesler:  I already have this one on my spring order.  It looks like a fun read and I think it will be big with middle schoolers!

5.  The Case of the Missing Tiger's Eye by Walker Styles:  Another one I already had on my spring order.  I think my younger middle schoolers will enjoy this one.

6.  Hot Pterodactyl Boyfriend by Alan Cumyn:  I am not too sure about this one, but I do think it might be funny.  Very weird concept but I think that is what might make it a more interesting read.

7.  OCDaniel by Wesley King:  This one came to my attention awhile ago, so I was happy to get a physical copy.  Looks like a good coming of age, overcoming type story, with a boy as the main character.

8.  We are the Ants by Shaun David Hutchinson:  I think this one looks like such a good read because the idea of holding the fate of the world in the hands of a teenager is so scary.  They are so emotional!  I bet that's how the idea for this one came about, dealing with emotional teens.

9.  The Year We Fell Apart by Emily Martin:  This one looks like a good contemporary romance, but not a light-hearted one.  Some heavy issues here I think.

10.  Under Their Skin by Margaret Peterson Haddix:  Always one of my favorite middle grade authors.  I was super excited to get this one, very excited to see a new series from Haddix!

11. Impostor Queen by Sarah Fine:  I hadn't heard of this one until I got this copy.  Looks like a good fantasy!

12.  The Way I Used to Be by Amber Smith:  Dealing with date rape, this one looks very powerful.  Again something I think a lot of girls deal with without a lot of help.

Added to the List #17: Simon & Schuster Edition

I got some awesome books in the mail from Simon & Schuster in September.  I have ordered most of them for my library (I want to read through more of The Death and Life of Zebulon Finch to see if it's appropriate before for my middle school library).

A Nearer Moon and This Side of Wild are already really popular.  How gorgeous is the cover for A Nearer Moon?!  I have heard awesome things about The Nest--supposedly really creepy.  And Kenneth Oppel is always a favorite of mine.

Thanks so much for the books Simon & Schuster!  Always good to discover something new for mine and my student's enjoyment!

I have a lot of added to the list or book haul posting to do.  I need to catch up from September and October. To start, though I am going to work my way back.  Last week I checked out  In a Dark, Dark Wood by Ruth Ware and Blood and Salt by Kim Liggett from my public library.  Both look like spooky, intriguing reads and both have gotten a lot of positive reviews.  Hopefully I will get time to read them before they are due!

I was sent Uprooted by Lynne Reid Banks from HarperCollins.  This looks like an interesting story about World War 2 from a Canadian's point of view.  Plus, Lynne Reid Banks is an excellent writer.

Added to the List: The Great Good Summer by Liz Garton Scanlon

Yesterday I got this book in the mail.  I had read the synopsis of this on Edelweiss and put it on my fall order for my library, but didn't add it to my TBR list because it just didn't seem to click for me.

There is just something that changes when you have the physical book in your hands.

First of all, it is a really amazing cover...illustrated by Marla Frazee, one of my favorite illustrators.  I love the colors and the font.  The cover reminds me a bit of Love Ruby Lavender, one of my favorite middle grade reads.  That script font is used throughout the book and I just love how it looks!
Re-reading the synopsis made me tear up a little bit so this book got added to my TBR and moved way up to the top!

Here's the synopsis from GoodReads:

Ivy and Paul hatch a secret plan to find Ivy’s missing mom and say good-bye to the space shuttle in this evocative, heartfelt novel reminiscent of Each Little Bird that Sings and Because of Winn-Dixie. Ivy Green’s mama has gone off with a charismatic preacher called Hallelujah Dave to The Great Good Bible Church of Panhandle Florida. At least that’s where Ivy and her dad think Mama is. Added to the List: Simon & Schuster Edition

Over the past few weeks I have gotten quite a bounty of books in the mail.  Some I requested, some I entered contests to win, and some surprises.  Since I know I am not going to get them all read I decided I wanted to highlight them here and tell you what I think sounds great about each book.  Today are the books I have gotten from Simon & Schuster.  I was fortunate enough to get a box of upcoming summer releases and there are some really good ones in this box.  The best things about the books they sent is that there were a bunch that had escaped my notice that I know will be big hits in my library.

1.  Crown of Three by JD Rinehart.  I hadn't heard anything about this book until I opened this box.  It looks great and I think will be a big hit with my students.  The synopsis kind of reminded me of a few fantasy series that my kids like--Ranger's Apprentice and the False Prince.  I might loan this to one of my stronger readers over spring break and get his opinion.

2.  The Orphan Army (Nightsiders #1) by Jonathan Maberry.  If you know anything about me by reading this blog you know that I LOVED the ROT & RUIN series by Jonathan Maberry.  Not a single one of those books failed, he kept the series amped up all the way through (although the third one was pretty dark).  I am not sure about the sunopsis of this book but Mr. Maberry has earned my loyalty and I am excited to give this one a try.

3.  Last Year's Mistake by Gina Ciocca.  YA romance.  Looks really good, maybe a little deeper than your typical YA romance.  Will probably rip right through this one.

4.  Chantress Fury by Amy Butler Greenfield.  It wasn't until right now, while writing this post that I realized this one was the third in a series.  The synopsis doesn't read like it is the third and I think it sounds really interesting.  I think I will give this one a try without reading the other two first.

5.  River Runs Deep by Jennifer Bradbury.  This sounds like such a good historical fiction book. 

6.  Suicide Notes From Beautiful Girls by Lynn Weingarten.  This one sounds heartbreaking.  A broken friendship and a mystery.  I had already downloaded the egalley of this one because it sounded so amazing. 

7.  Shackled by Tom Leveen.  This is also one I hadn't heard of until I opened the box, but it's the one I ended up throwing in my bag for school today.  I doubt I will get it started but it sounds so creepy and suspensful.  Haven't read any Tom Leveen yet, but always heard good things!

8.  Attack of the Alien Horde by Robert Venditti.  Again one I hadn't heard of, but after flipping through it I went and added it to my order for next fall.  It is a combo super hero/graphic novel.  I think this is going to be really big with the middle grade set!

9.  Cosmoe's Wiener Getaway by Mac Brallier & Rachel Maguire.  Again one that went right on my order for next fall.  This is a graphic novel that will be loved by Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Big Nate readears!

10.  Dime by E. R. Frank.  Hadn't heard of this one at all, but wow, it sounds so heart breaking.  It's about teen prostitution and I have a feeling that it will be a story that grabs on from the beginning and won't let go.

11.  The Secret Cookie Club by Martha Freeman.  Sounds like a sweet, quick, fun read that might be perfect after I read Dime!

Added to the List: Macmillan Edition

Over the past few weeks I have gotten quite a bounty of books in the mail.  Some I requested, some I entered contests to win, and some surprises.  Since I know I am not going to get them all read I decided I wanted to highlight them here and tell you what I think sounds great about each book.  Today are the books I have gotten from Macmillan.  I am on a list for bloggers and once a season get the chance to request some books.  This time I focused on middle grade books and requested three books that sounded awesome.  I also got one YA contemporary romance because those are my favorites. 

1.  Book Scavenger by Jennifer Chamliss Bertman.  I love a good middle grade mystery/puzzle book.  The Westing Game, Winston Breen, Chasing Vermeer.  This one sounds like it will be an awesome addition to this genre.

2.  Secrets of Selkie Bay by Shelley Moore Thomas.  You know what mythical creature doesn't get enough press, Selkies.  I have always been enchanted by the mythology of selkies and the synopsis for this one gave me goosebumps!

3.  The Book of Dares to Lost Friends by Jane Kelley.  Oh the pressure that middle school puts on friendships is amazing.  I see it every year, girls that come in as best friends and within a few months act like strangers.  There is always one who is hurt and sometimes one that doesn't even realize she is doing anything wrong.  This is a story I am looking forward to reading--it's a little bit mystical and a lot realistic.  Looks great!

4.  Joyride by Anna Banks.  A contemporary YA romance, just the kind I like.  I know that I will read this one quickly.

Added to the List #11: Weekend Reading

This was a great weekend for reading.  I started out Friday by reading Isla and the Happily Ever After by Stephanie Perkins.  After that I had to go to my library to grab Anna and the French Kiss because that was the one book by Stephanie Perkins I had not read.  (By the way, how jealous are you that I can run to my school library to get books whenever I want?)

I won a contest and got a Kindle copy of Since You've Been Gone by Morgan Matson.  I had wanted to read this one for sometime so I was excited to win this contest!  (It was a twitter contest I stumbled across being sponsored by Jen at Pop Goes the Reader, adorable blog! Check it out.)(I don't have a kindle, but this past fall I got a Samsung Nook Tablet and downloaded the Kindle app so now I can use both stores for books!)

This past week I was lucky enough to get auto approved for Scholastic egalleys on Edelweiss.  Do you know how excited I was when this happened?!  I downloaded a few I have had my eye on:

Added to the List #10: Fantasy

I received an invite to join a blog tour for Seraphina and/or it's sequel Shadow Scale.  At that point I hadn't read either of them.  So I checked Seraphina out from my library and whipped through it (I will be posting my review tomorrow).  At the same time, my oldest son introduced me to Settler of Catan which is a super fun game.  Those tow things have given me a hankering for fantasy reads and these are the ones I have added to my "to-read" pile:

I really enjoyed Grave Mercy, the first book in the Fair Assassins series by Robin LaFevers, but haven't made time to read the next two, so they are going on my list.  I already started Shadow Scale, the ARC of it is available on NetGalley.  Seeker looks like a fantasty book, but I couldn't tell by the synopsis if it goes more into the sci-fi realm.  A Wicked Thing is a retelling, or post telling, of Sleeping Beauty.  And I am probably most excited for Uprooted, which kind of sounds like a Beauty and the Beast type story, but with dragons!

I bought The Inifinite Sea for my library, but checked it out first because I am the librarian, that's why!
Mister Death's Blue Eyed Girls just always catches my eye when I check it in or am shelving so I grabbed that one too.

I got The Terrible Two and Nuts to You as surprises in the mail.  The Terrible Two came in the coolest package!  And the cover for Nuts to You is just a pretty fall scene that makes me want to read it.

Dearest was one I requested because I read and really enjoyed the first two in this series.

Lots to read, but lots to enjoy as well!
