My Thoughts: Ten by Gretchen McNeil

4 soft peanut butter cookies.

Cover Love:
Yes, I like the colors and the ominous feel to it.  This cover works for me!

Why I Wanted to Read This:
I love a good murder mystery and loved the synopsis for this one!  Here it is from Good Reads:
And their doom comes swiftly.
It was supposed to be the weekend of their lives—an exclusive house party on Henry Island. Best friends Meg and Minnie each have their reasons for being there (which involve T.J., the school’s most eligible bachelor) and look forward to three glorious days of boys, booze and fun-filled luxury.

But what they expect is definitely not what they get, and what starts out as fun turns dark and twisted after the discovery of a DVD with a sinister message: Vengeance is mine.

Suddenly people are dying, and with a storm raging, the teens are cut off from the outside world. No electricity, no phones, no internet, and a ferry that isn’t scheduled to return for two days. As the deaths become more violent and the teens turn on each other, can Meg find the killer before more people die? Or is the killer closer to her than she could ever imagine?
Romance?: A little bit, more off screen.

What I Liked:
While there weren't a lot of characters I really liked, I did find myself rooting for Meg.  Sometimes I was rooting that she would kill Minnie herself, but mostly I was hoping she survived the weekend.  I did like TJ though.  He seemed very sweet and hot. I wish he and Meg had some time to hash out their issues though.

The murders were awfully grisly.  The author did a good job describing them but not so with so much details that I was grossed out. One thing I love about reading a scary book is that I can skim.  If something catches my eye I can go back and read it more thoroughly, but if it's too gross or scary I can skip it.  With a scary movie you can cover your eyes and ears but some still seeps in (and you can't just fast forward because then you have to watch to know when to stop and then you end up seeing scary images).  I am a weenie.  I didn't have to skim or skip much in this book at all because the tension was there and the murders, it just wasn't too over the top.

Some of the teens sort of needed to be murdered.  Or at least scared straight because some of them were horrible people!

It did not end like April Fool's Day, the movie that came to mind when I was reading the synopsis.  Kind of wish it had, but no such luck.  In fact, the ending had me totally stumped.  I was misdirected for sure.

I think this is loosely based on an Agatha Christie book, one that I have never read.  I also am going to assume that most of the readers in my library have not read it.  I think my readers will love this one!!

To Sum Up:  I am going to booktalk this one big time!  I think it will be checked out most of the year.

Book bought for my library collection.

  1. Ooh, I've been looking forward to this one! I'm glad you said you could skim over the scary parts; I do not like scary movies one bit, so I can see reading something scary to be easier. :) Great review!

I tried this one and couldn't get into the beginning.
I'm glad to hear I'm not missing much.

    1. I did read some negative reviews on good reads but it was after I read it. Glad I waited to read them because I did enjoy it. It was a perfect gap book between harder reads!
