Tween Tuesday: The Princess Curse by Merrie Haskell

3 soft & spicy snickerdoodles.

Cover Love: I do adore this cover. It's part of the reason I wanted to read it.

Why I Wanted to Read This:
I love the cover and the buzz I had heard about this story. Plus I love re-worked fairy tales. Here's the synopsis from Good Reads:
Twelve princesses suffer from a puzzling (if silly) curse, and anyone who ends it will win a reward. Reveka, a sharp-witted and irreverent apprentice herbalist, wants that reward. But her investigations lead to deeper mysteries and a daunting choice—will she break the curse at the peril of her own soul?

I Kept Reading Because: I wanted to see how all this tied up!

Romance?: A little start.

What I Liked (& Didn't):
One thing that kind of bothered me was Reveka's age. I felt she was a little too young for what she did to break the curse. That was brought up by someone in the book, but I had a hard time getting over it.

Besides being a re-working of the Twelve Dancing Princesses it is also kind of a re-working of Beauty & the Beast. I liked that part of the story better than the first part.

I guess that biggest issue I had with this book was that I didn't really like many of the characters. None of the princesses really seemed like they were worth saving.

I also didn't feel like that the "curse" ever got fully explained.

I liked the demon that was in charge of the curse, there is more to that story and I want to know what it is!

I also really liked Reveka and how she grew in the book. If there is a sequel I will be reading it. I think this story will get much deeper and better.

To Sum Up: Decent retelling of a couple fairy tales. A good set up for a sequel!

Book requested and received from HarperCollins! Thanks!

Tween Tuesday is hosted by Sarah, the GreenBeanTeenQueen. Thanks Sarah!

  1. I wondered about this one. I love your reviews, Jana--they are always so honest. :-)

I just finished Tangled Tides by Karen Amanda Hooper (stayed up most of the night) and it was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO good!!!

  2. I really hope there is a sequel! There is so much more I want to read about with Reveka. I agree, there seems to be more to the story of the curse. I hope we get to read it.

Oh another note, I would love to be eating a soft & spicy snickerdoodle right about now. Your ratings always sound wonderful. :)

  3. I have age problems in books too and it bugs me as I'm reading. If the character acts too young or too old it's distracting. (But that cover does make me want to pick it up!!)
