Review: The Lipstick Laws by Amy Holder

3.5 whoopie pies!

Cover Love: Yes! Totally eye-catching and unique.

Why I Wanted to Read This: The reviews! Everyone has something good to say about this book. Here's the synopsis from Good Reads:

At Penford High School, Britney Taylor is the queen bee. She dates whomever she likes, rules over her inner circle of friends like Genghis Khan, and can ruin anyone's life with a snap of perfectly manicured fingers. Just ask the unfortunate few who have crossed her. For April Bowers, Britney is also the answer to her prayers. April is so unpopular, kids don't even know she exists. But one lunch spent at Britney's table, and April is basking in the glow of popularity. But Britney's friendship comes with a high price tag. How much is April willing to pay?

I Kept Reading Because:
This was one of those books that was kind of hard to read because it felt so realistic! I just had to put it away every few pages because of my burning hate for Britney. She was so horrible and you just knew April was headed for a downfall!

Romance?: Yes! And two likable guys actually.

What I Liked (& Didn't):

This really felt like a re-telling of Mean Girls, but I don't mean that in a negative way.

I love that April didn't wallow. There were a few "woe-is-me" moments (justified), but mostly she just decided t take her life back. So many girls could learn from April!

I don't like how April's relationship with Matt developed "off screen". I wish we'd seen more of that in the first half of the book. I hadn't gotten the impression they were close enough to get upset at her for going to a party with another boy. Then after he was mad at her she had to work at betting back in his good graces but we didn't get to see any of that.

I know that books like this that don't have a revenge element are kind of boring, but we all know how these things can backfire. The way this whole this escalates is hysterical.

April goes through so many changes in the book, wall flower, take back her life girl, bitch...There were times I really liked her and sympathized with her, and there were time I wanted to give her a slap.

To Sum Up: I enjoyed this book a lot and liked the growth I saw in April. I don't think Britney really learned anything, but I see a lot of bright spots in April's future!

Book received through Net Galley. Thanks!!

  1. Nice review! I do agree, this felt like a Mean Girls retelling, but it also felt original. I also wish the romance had been more "on screen" I never really got on board with their relationship.

  2. Hmmm... I'll have to think about this one. Not on the top of my way-too-long list. :-)

  3. It's nice when I see something in a book and someone else sees the same things! Makes me realize I kind of do know what I am talking about...sometimes!

  4. Yeah, I'm not a fan of the "off screen" romance, either. The whole point is for us to see it. Still sounds like a good read, though. Thanks for the review!
