Can't Let It Go

Have you ever come across something in your reading that just doesn't quite sit well with you and even though you know it is just a book and that it shouldn't bother you, you just can't quite let it go?

For example, my sons and I are listening to The Graveyeard Book. Great story. Neil Gaiman is an awesome narrator. But, (and this bothered me when I first read it a few years ago) where does Bod shower? How does he keep clean? Does he brush his teeth? I know this shouldn't bother me, but it does and I can't let it go!!

  1. Sometimes, I think about things like that too.
But maybe there is a creek or pond at the graveyard that we, the readers, don't know about-- and maybe Bod has a little bag of toiletries too.

    ;o)

  2. I do that sometimes too.

Funny how you can suspend disbelief and accept that he's being raised by ghosts, but not that he doesn't have a bathroom. Perhaps there's a fountain?

  3. Funny. I didn't give this any thought when I listened to this in my car. Gaiman is a great storyteller-I agree. Little boys don't care about cleanliness...?

  4. Ha ha ha ha ha! That's why you're such a great children's librarian, Jana. You are as curious as they are! :-)

    You have been tagged, girlfriend!

  5. I know what you mean. There are some (mainly logistical) things that I sometimes cannot let go of in books. This is a very astute point, and I hadn't actually thought of it while I was reading it. Maybe there is a groundskeepers bathroom still working somewhere?
