And More

Well, I should have never gone over and shelved books because the ones I missed have been coming fast. But, would they have made the list? That remains to be seen.

*Mrs. Piggle Wiggle by Betty MacDonald. My favorite chapter? The I-Thought-You-Saiders cure. So funny. I don't know that it would have made the list, but it was close. Then I found this essay and it made me smile and laugh and sad all at once.

*A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L'Engle. This was one that I didn't read a young reader. I tried, but could never get into it. However, I read it about 11 years ago and loved it. I hesitate sometimes to recommend it to readers at my school because of my own experience, but, my love for it prevails and I do push it on kids. I need to get a copy with an updated cover though.

*Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren. I cannot beleive that this one didn't even pop up for me when I was making my list. Could there be a more fun book to read aloud for kids? I am not sure there could!

*Also, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH by Robert O'Brien and From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E.L. Konigsburg and two I also have a lot of love and affection for. In fact, they are two that I maybe should re-read sometime this year.

And all of this kinds of makes me sad because there is so much great literature for children out there and my sons' childhoods are flying by and they haven't heard or read most of it!! So many books...

  1. I liked your first list but this second truly has three of my favorite classics on it. Pippie, The Rats of NIMH and From the mixed-up files are personal favorites from my childhood. I recently reread From the mixed-up files just to see if it truly was wonderful and I was glad to find that it was! Thanks for reminding everyone of these great choices.

  2. I reread From the mixed-up files nearly every year and am looking for a copy of rats of NIMH to reread before introducing to my son. Both were on my list :)

(rats of NIMH i originally "had" to read for class. But became a favorite.)
