My brain just stumbled on one I forgot. Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. But would it have been in my top ten? Probably not.
Oh, Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls. Yes, I think this could have bumped one of the other ones off, just not sure which one (The Giver?)
The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles by Julie Andrews. Now this one I was read by my fourth grade teacher. I LOVED it. When I read it years later I found the first part to be kind of boring. But, I know of several teachers who read it aloud every year and the kids always respond positively.
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. Maybe would have made the top ten.
Overall I am still feeling pretty good about my choices.
