Is It About the Hunt?

Does this ever happen to you?

You read about a book that you know you want to read.  So, you stalk NetGalley and Edelweiss, find any and all contests to enter, put a hold on the library's pre-order or pre-order it from the bookstore.

Then, finally, finally, you get a copy in your hot little hands!  It might be an ARC or a won copy or an egalley or it might be after the publication date.  And you jump up and down and smile and sigh.  Happiness!

Then it sits.  And sits.  And sits.  You just don't pick it up and read it right away.  Even though you KNOW you will love it and most of the reviews you read confirm that, you just don't start it.

Why is that?  I have a book that I wanted so badly, finally got it after it was released, and there it sits.  Is it that I am afraid if it ending?  Or not measuring up (if it is a sequel)?  Or is the hunt what it's all about?  The rush of getting it is so great that the reading can't be nearly as great?

All I know is that this trait of mine (and maybe yours) drive me nuts!

How about you?  What bumps something to the top of your TBR pile?

  1. OMG so so so been there. Usually because I'm in the mood when I'm hunting and by the time it arrives, the mood has left me. *le sigh* I'm such a fickle reader.

    1. I think you are right. It is all in the mood. I know that right now I want warm, summery reads. So if I get a winter book or fall book I am not going to read it, yet. But I have one I knwo I will love and do want to read, but I am think I wan tot read it when I won't be interrupted, and I don't imagine that will ever happen!

  2. So having that problem with the copy of The Spindlers that I bought as soon as it came out, I loved Liesel and Po and know I'll love this one too, but there aren't any new middle grade books coming soon from her (well that I know of.). So it sits prettily staring at me.

    1. I think that JuJu hit the nail on the head when she said it's sometimes about the mood. I wanted the sequel to Anna Dressed in Blood really bad. The company mailed me a finish copy when it came out, back in the fall. When things are spooky. It also happened to be when school started so I was too busy to start it, and I still haven't. Right now I want warm books set it summer time. Not scary. But I will read it soon, I swear!!

  3. I'm so with you! I get so excited for a new book to come - waiting for a book I've requested/won/bought to come in the mail...and then it just sits on my TBR stack for a while, and sometimes it's a LONG while! If it's a book I don't have to review, and it's one I'm excited about but not necessarily "I-have-to-read-it-right-now," then I sometimes like to save it. It's like saving dessert for last...except then I end up saving dessert for the next day, next week, next month... *sigh*

It's always nice to know you're not alone in your feelings/actions! :)

    1. It's very nice to know I am not alone! Sometimes I wonder if I think that as long as I have it (or have access to it), I don't need to read it--because I can read it any time. It's all about the "get."
