Review: Always a Witch by Carolyn McCullough

4 yummy oatmeal butterscotch chip cookies!

Cover Love: I think the cover is really pretty but doesn't fit the book or the character of Tasmin at all.

Why I Wanted to Read This:
I loved the first book Once a Witch so I was super excited to read this one! Here's the synopsis from GoodReads:

The adventures of Tam and Gabriel continue with more time travel, Talents, spy work, and of course, the evil Knights.

Since the gripping conclusion of Once A Witch, Tamsin Greene has been haunted by her grandmother's prophecy that she will soon be forced to make a crucial decision—one so terrible that it could harm her family forever. When she discovers that her enemy, Alistair Knight, went back in time to Victorian-era New York in order to destroy her family, Tamsin is forced to follow him into the past. Stranded all alone in the nineteenth century, Tamsin soon finds herself disguised as a lady's maid in the terrifying mansion of the evil Knight family, avoiding the watchful eye of the vicious matron, La Spider, and fending off the advances of Liam Knight. As time runs out, both families square off in a thrilling display of magic. And to her horror, Tamsin finally understands the nature of her fateful choice.

I Kept Reading Because: I enjoyed the story and the characters so much.

Romance?: Yes! But not as much as the first. Tasmin and Gabriel are firmly a couple and I love them.

What I Liked (& Didn't):
This was the first book I read on my ereader. To be honest I totally missed the feel of a book, but that was outweighed by my excitement at having the book so far in advance of it's release!

At first I had a hard time getting into the time travel. This one mostly took place in the past. Once I got to know the new characters I was able to cruise through the story.

I liked the conflict but was a little lost on how the Domani worked. I just didn't remember a lot of the details from the first.

I loved seeing Tasmin use her talent.

The ending made me cry and I am always surprised when that happens. But, I like it when an author can write such with so much emotion that if affects me also!

I really hated Rowena (Tasmin's sister). I don't remember hating her as much in the first book, but she just really bugged me!

What I Would Like to See Happen:
If there is another book in this series I would like for Tasmin to be able to get back what she loses in this book. I also want more interaction between her and Gabriel.

To Sum Up: A great second book in a good series. Well written, a lot of action and goo characters!

Book requested and received through NetGalley. Thanks Houghton Mifflin Harcourt!

  2. I know. Those are my favorite cookies but I hardly ever make them because they are too good! And these are good books as well. (I powder my oatmeal in the blender--it make the cookies so much better--YUM!)
