Review: The DUFF by Kody Keplinger

3.5 double stuffed Oreos.

Cover Love: It's okay, the letters definitely are eye catching. My son read them and thought that it sounded like a mean book.

Why I Wanted to Read This:
This book had a lot of buzz when it came out last summer. I just finally got around to reading it. Here's the synopsis from Good Reads:
Seventeen-year-old Bianca Piper is cynical and loyal, and she doesn’t think she’s the prettiest of her friends by a long shot. She’s also way too smart to fall for the charms of man-slut and slimy school hottie Wesley Rush. In fact, Bianca hates him. And when he nicknames her “the Duff,” she throws her Coke in his face.

But things aren’t so great at home right now, and Bianca is desperate for a distraction. She ends up kissing Wesley. Worse, she likes it. Eager for escape, Bianca throws herself into a closeted enemies-with-benefits relationship with him.

Until it all goes horribly awry. It turns out Wesley isn’t such a bad listener, and his life is pretty screwed up, too. Suddenly Bianca realizes with absolute horror that she’s falling for the guy she thought she hated more than anyone.

I Kept Reading Because: Although I didn't relate to Bianca, I really wanted something good to happen to her!

Romance?: Yes!

What I Liked (& Didn't):
I really started out not liking Bianca. She was so negative about everything, and so unwilling to change. I got the feeling that she truly felt she was better than a lot of people because she was so cynical. However, she did acknowledge that she was negative. I am glad for that because lots of time really negative people don't realize they are so negative.

Also, Bianca loved Jessica and her positive attitude, so there was something redemptive about her.

You do get some good background on why Bianca is so negative (especially with boys) and pretty unhappy (her family life). I am glad that author gave us Bianca's reasons, it made her more likeable.

I like these kinds of stories where there is a redemption for a main character. She didn't end this story hugely changed, but she did end the story feeling like she could change. I liked that touch.

To Sum Up: A good story for teens. I think many girls could relate to Bianca and find a kinship with her!

Book checked out from public library.

  1. Hm, usually I want to see more of a change in the end. I'm still on the fence about this book. It seems very polarizing, but I'm just not sure it's for me.

  2. I enjoyed this book, but I loved her second book Shut Out. I got an ARC of it and could not put it down. I am reviewing it in September.
