Book Review: The Body Finder by Kimberly Derting

4 double stuffed Oreos!

Cover Love: I actually really like it. It is simple, yet eye catching.

Why I Wanted to Read This Book: One of my friend's had highly recommended it last year, but I just never got started reading it. When I heard a sequel was on it's way I wanted to get this one read before that one came out!
Here's the synposis from Good Reads:

Violet Ambrose is grappling with two major issues: Jay Heaton and her morbid secret ability. While the sixteen-year-old is confused by her new feelings for her best friend since childhood, she is more disturbed by her "power" to sense dead bodies—or at least those that have been murdered. Since she was a little girl, she has felt the echoes the dead leave behind in the world . . . and the imprints that attach to their killers.Violet has never considered her strange talent to be a gift; it mostly just led her to find dead birds her cat left for her. But now that a serial killer is terrorizing her small town, and the echoes of the local girls he's claimed haunt her daily, Violet realizes she might be the only person who can stop him.Despite his fierce protectiveness over her, Jay reluctantly agrees to help Violet find the murderer—and Violet is unnerved by her hope that Jay's intentions are much more than friendly. But even as she's falling intensely in love, Violet is getting closer and closer to discovering a killer . . . and becoming his prey herself.

I Kept Reading Because:
It was super good! Suspenseful, mysterious and romantic!

Romance?: Yes! I adore Jay and I actually like that there was no triangle. It was all about Violet & Jay!

What I Liked (& Didn't):
With the massive glut of books with a paranormal bent I was delighted to see that this was basically a straight up mystery. Yes, Violet has a unique ability, but there are no supernatural creatures. It was a breath of fresh air!

It was based in Buckley, Washington!! My sister and her family lives there and my niece goes to White River High School! I loved that I could picture actual places in my head. I envisioned my sister's house and the development she lives in whenever Violet's house was mentioned.

I liked the quick chapters from the killer's point of view. This was a good mystery!

I liked Violet's ability. I kind of equate it with being a super intuitive profiler. She can use this ability for some real good as she develops it--and as people trust her to use it for good.

I understand how Violet's parents wanted to protect her, but they should start to help her develop it, not keep hiding it. I imagine that will come for her. This would be a good character to see through college.

Again, I loved Jay and Violet and was glad there was no triangle. It was all about Jay from the beginning.

What I Would Like to See:
I don't want anything to come between Jay & Violet. And I want to see Violet find someone to support her with her ability and maybe help her refine it.

To Sum Up: Great start to a series with a unique main character! I look forward to book #2.

Book checked out from public library.

  5. I struggled with this one at first, and throughout at times. Probably because I have young girls and the threats or violence against them was scary for me. Good book though otherwise.

  6. That is probably why! I whipped right through it. Amazing how being a mom can affect us with the things we watch & read. I will not watch war movies anymore, especially Saving Private Ryan.
