Any of you who have read my blog for any length of time probably are aware of my deep love of The Penderwicks. So imagine my excitement when I found out that Jeanne Birdsall wrote a picture book. Then, to my immense thrill I found out thatthe pictures were done by Matt Phelan, an illustrator I have adored since seeing his brilliant illustrations for The Seven Wonders of Sassafrass Springs.
I would love to meet the genius who decided to match these two incredible talents up. Amazing!
I finally got my hands on a copy and I can safely say it was worth the wait. PERFECTION!! The pictures are perfect for the story--whimsical and darling, colorful, but muted. And the story is precious, the lengths an annoyed older sister goes to safe her baby brother. It is just wonderful. If I still taught kindergarten this would be a staple book for the fall. If I had a little girl with a younger brother I imagine this would be a daily read for me. As it is, I am no longer in the classroom and my boys are a bit old and I have no daughter. I guess I will just buy a copy that I can drool over every now and again.
Read this wonderful interview of Jeanne's about the release of the book...and info on the upcoming Penderwicks book.
Oh the art is so cuuuute!
ReplyDeleteWow, that's pretty high praise. I guess I need to get my own hands on a copy, too! :-)
ReplyDeleteI just checked this book out from our library! I'll have to pull it out of the bag and give it a look-see.
