As I have alluded to before I am the mother of only boys. Although I wouldn't exchange either of them for anything, I sometimes still want a girl. (If I get too feeling sorry for myself I just call my sister and let her complain about my 15 year old niece for a half hour and then I am over it for a month or so). I would be a great mom for a girl. But, it is not to be for me. So I find I tend to avoid overly girl things, like movies and books because I have no one to share them with. (Although that is really not true because I have several tweenage girl friends would love to talk to me about books and movies and TV). So, when I first found books called The Mother-Daughter Book Club by Heather Vogel Frederick I was not going to read them! But, I knew they would be successful books in my library so I bought them for my collection. And then because I knew I had to read one of them to be able to book talk them I did. And I loved it.
The first book is about four girls and their moms who come together to read Little Women. I loved that the author writes each chapter in a different girl's voice. It helps get to know them all better and there is probably something about one of the characters that a reader would relate to. There have been two more books in this series, each focusing on a different book and author. In the second book the club reads Anne of Green Gables and in the third it is Daddy Long Legs. Every girl I have had read these had loved them and the covers attract the attention of many girls who check them out without my suggestion.
So, I can put aside my aversion to things dealing with mothers and daughters when I find books as fun and good as these!

I have been wanting to pick up this series for awhile! I really like how each book goes with a different classic-I loved Little Women and Anne of Green Gables as a kid.
ReplyDeleteI hadn't really seen these expect for a few times. Glad you highlighted them, so now I know better what they are about. I may have to make sure I read one!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for your kind words about my books! Want to know something funny? Like you, I too am the mother of boys. Ironic, isn't it, that I ended up writing about a mother-daughter book club? :)
