The Red Blazer Girls by Michael Beil

4 cookies out of 5.
I adored this book and will be suggesting it for many of the upper grade readers at my school. The two things I loved the most: 1) how a grown up man captured the tone of a 13 year old girl so perfectly and 2) how none of the usual suspects of characters that could turn against the girls did. I was prepared for that being the experienced, cynical reader that I am, I even had picked out the adult I thought would be using them, but it didn't happen, and I applaud the author for that!

It started a bit slow and I wasn't sure it would quite capture me, but I got over the mini-hump and I am so glad I kept going. It will be an easy book for kids to get, the humor is not over their heads (like it might be in The Case of the Case of Mistaken Identity and like it probably would be (for my age readers anyway) in The Big Splash). It will make them think as they get caught up in the puzzles Sophie and her friends have to complete, and there will probably be a character they can relate to in some way. All in all a fun read!

I hadn't heard of this one. I'll be adding it to my classroom library. Thanks for sharing it!

  3. I loved this book! I can hardly wait for the second one...much more clever than the Nancy Drew boosk I grew up on (even though I loved Nancy Drew, too).
