Review: One Moment by Kristina McBride

4 buttery and rich shortbread cookies.

Cover Love:  This actually really appeals to me.  I can envision the rest of the cover model reflecting on things--trying to remember.

Why I Wanted to Read This:
In my contemporary teen reading frenzy this was another one I wanted to try out.  Here's the synopsis from GoodReads:

This was supposed to be the best summer of Maggie's life. Now it's the one she'd do anything to forget.

Maggie remembers hanging out at the gorge with her closest friends after a blowout party. She remembers climbing the trail with her perfect boyfriend, Joey. She remembers that last kiss, soft, lingering, and meant to reassure her. So why can't she remember what happened in the moment before they were supposed to dive? Why was she left cowering at the top of the cliff, while Joey floated in the water below-dead?
As Maggie's memories return in snatches, nothing seems to make sense. Why was Joey acting so strangely at the party? Where did he go after taking her home? And if Joey was keeping these secrets, what else was he hiding?

I Kept Reading Because:
This was a good mystery and I wanted to be there when Maggie got her memory back.

Romance?:  Yes.

What I Liked:
This was an interesting mystery because everyone knew what happened to Joey, but there was a mystery about how and what happened right before he fell off the cliff. Maggie doesn't remember anything because she is so traumatized about being there and about losing her boyfriend.  I just am not sure that the group of friends could have stayed together first of all when two of them started dating and then again when one of them died while all of them were present.

It was interesting that we got to know most of the group in the first person during the aftermath but only got to know through everyone's memories of him.  And I don't feel that his memory got trashed, instead he just got knocked off the pedestal that everyone had put him on!  It was good that this happened--it made it easier for everyone to move on with their lives.

This was not suspenseful in that someone was after Maggie to keep her quiet or anything, but it was very interesting to see her rebuild her memories.  And how everyone around her either helped her to rebuild them or to pushed her into learning new things about Joey, and their group of friends.

To Sum Up:  A good mystery with a sweet romance on the side.  I will be buying this one for my library.

Book requested and received from NetGalley.

  1. How have I not heard of this book before? Thanks for bringing it to my attention! I've been looking for a good YA mystery. Is it more mystery or romance?
