Tween Tuesday: Ordinary Magic by Caitlen Rubino-Bradway

4 magical seven layer bars.

Cover Love:  Yes.  I just adore this cover.  The font for the title, the colors and the girl ready to go off and face her future.

Why I Wanted to  Read This:
This was on my radar once I read the synopsis.  Here it is from GoodReads:

In Abby’s world, magic isn’t anything special: it’s a part of everyday life. So when Abby learns that she has zero magical abilities, she’s branded an "Ord"—ordinary, bad luck, and quite possibly a danger to society. The outlook for kids like Abby isn’t bright. Many are cast out by their families, while others are sold to treasure hunters (ordinary kids are impervious to spells and enchantments). Luckily for Abby, her family enrolls her in a school that teaches ordinary kids how to get around in a magical world. But with treasure-hunting kidnappers and carnivorous goblins lurking around every corner, Abby’s biggest problem may not be learning how to be ordinary—it’s whether or not she’s going to survive the school year!
I Kept Reading Because:
I was very caught up in the world where this book was set!

Romance?:  Some hints of a few.

What I Liked (& Didn't):
Here is something I really liked:  lately with books of a supernatural/paranormal plot the setting is a parallel society within our world.  Ordinary Magic is set in a whole newly imagined world.  I loved that and would like to explore more of this world.

There were a lot of characters I adored:  Becky, Peter and Abby's whole family.  They were awesome!  I would love to be a part of a family like this--big and crazy and totally devoted to one another!

I hope there is a book that focuses on Alexa and how she met King Steven.  I want to read that story!  Actually I would like there to be a book about each of the Hale siblings!

The prejudice of the "normal" people to "ords" was heartbreaking.  There was a point where I was hoping that Abby would turn out to be very magical, but then a little bit into the book I was glad she was an ord and hoped she would stand up and be strong and a great ord!

Abby's adventures with the "adventurers" were intense!  It is easy to imagine Abby all grown up and off on her own adventures.

The magic in this world is a lot of fun to see.  And I LOVED Alexa!  She was my favorite!

To Sum Up:
This was a fun book that I am hoping is that start of a series.  I look forward to visiting this world again.

Tween Tuesday is hosted by Sarah, the GreenBeanTeenQueen.  Thanks Sarah!

  1. I love the cover of this one-I want to pick up just based on that. But then I read your review and I want to read it even more!:) And I agree-I like when they have a new world than just a parallel world to our own.

  2. I love the idea that the author has created an anti-super-hero, a young girl who is in her way 'disabled'. Think this will strike a cord with a lot of the kids who feel left out, unpopular or just not in step with peers.
    Book ordered!
