Review: The Lonely Hearts Club by Elizabeth Eulberg

4 fudgy brownies!

Cover Love:
Yes. It is cute and sets the tone for the book.

Why I Wanted to Read This:
I read and enjoyed Prom & Prejudice by this same author. I looked this one up and saw a lot of positive reviews so I wanted to check it out! Here's the synopsis from GoodReads:

Love is all you need...or is it? Penny's about to find out in this wonderful debut.
Penny is sick of boys and sick of dating. So she vows - no more. It's a personal choice...and, of course, soon everyone wants to know about it. And a few other girls are inspired. A movement is born; The Lonely Hearts Club (named after the band from Sgt. Pepper). Penny is suddenly known for her nondating ways...which is too bad, because there's this certain boy she can't help but like..

I Kept Reading Because:
I wanted to see Penny and Ryan end up together!

Romance?: Yes!

What I Liked (& Didn't):
I liked Penny a lot. She had real reason to swear off boys and was pretty certain she could handle not dating anyone. But, I didn't like that she left no room for compromise for herself.

The other girls were well written. There was one to represent all types of the girls you meet in high school. The best part was the support they showed one another through non-dating, and then finally dating again. Just learning to accept themselves with and without boys is a great message for all teenage girls!

I am glad the author gave them some nice boys as well. There were some asses, but also some boys who supported the girls finding themselves. I think this was a pretty true portrayal of high school.

To Sum Up: An empowering read for teenage girls! Quick and easy to read.

Book from my school library.

  1. Thanks for this review. I probably wouldn't have read this one, so it's good to know my students would love it. :-)
