What Makes You Cry?

Do you have a book that makes you cry, every time you read it? Last week when I was reading aloud to one of my last first grade classes I read them Leon & Bob. I don't know why because it always make me tear up! And when you are reading aloud in front of kids, you don't really want to have to pause so that you can collect yourself before crying. When I taught kindergarten there were always a few that made me cry.

But, the worst was Stone Fox. Back when I was a tutor I read this with a third grade reading group. I could barely finish it. I just wanted to put my head down and bawl. The whole last part as we each took a turn reading aloud all the kids would give me this kind of worried look. I think they were afraid to see me cry!

Last week I read Shug (mini-review below) and really cried as I finished that. I love books that bring out a strong emotion--whether it is humor, sadness, happiness or terror. It just adds a level of connectivity to what you read!

What makes you cry when you read it? Do any books stand out in your mind as ones that made you weep?

The only novel I've cried over is the Harry Potter series, at the end of books 6 and 7. They both broke my heart. However, I didn't cry upon re-read.

I do admit to avoiding sad novels, however. :)

  2. Wow... I love crying when I read. It just means that you really connected with the story! I pretty much always cry when I read a Jodi Picoult book- I remember a particularly awkward crying episode while reading The Pact on an airplane! Great question :)

  3. You know, it's funny...I cry at movies easily, but it takes more for a book to make me cry. I bawled through Harry Potter 7 and P.S. I Love You. I also cried at the end of If I Stay.

  4. Everyone's mentioning Harry Potter. Oddly enough, I am in getting to the end of rereadinging Book 7 right now, and today found myself tearing up about Harry being a Godfather when Teddy is born and then choked up again about Dobby. Ugh with me, I know what's going to happen and I am still a wreck over it.

  5. I avoid the books that others say make them cry buckets-- wimpy, huh. Don't mind the occasional tear up-- often it isn't a sad thing but a heroic thing that will bring a tear to my eye.
