The ARC Catch-22

I have been getting more ARCs. Some I have requested, some I have not. When I request one and they send it to me I get really excited and so impressed with the generosity of the company who sends it to me. Most of them I request because I want to see if the level is right or too high for my school library. Some, I just really want to read. It is super exciting to get a padded envelope with books, but here is my dilemma.

I have so many books checked out from the public library and so many from my own library's collection I want to read. When I get an ARC I feel like I have to put everything else aside and read that one right now, before it's published. When I know that if I am patient, I can eventually get it from my public library or order it for my library or just buy my own copy.

Then again, sometimes you get one that looks so amazing you have to start it RIGHT THEN.

  1. I'm the same way-I check out so many books from the library that I want to read and use as booktalks with my teens, but then I get ARCs and I feel like my library books have to wait-same with books I buy.

I've started rotating my books-I read one ARC, one library book and one book from home. That helps and I feel like I can read through all my piles a little more that way.

  2. That is a GREAT idea. I think I will try that but add in one from my library collection to the mix.

  3. I feel the same way! I love getting ARCs, but the piles of library books and my own pile are also enormous. It seems impossible to get everything read that I need/want to. I have started rotating a bit, too, to try and get to things before it ends up in a pile and just gets forgotten.

  4. My question is-how are you requesting them? I sent an email to Scholastic a while back for an ARC and the response was they didn't know what I was talking about, at all?
